GARBAGE CAN TURKEY
This works when the RV oven isn’t big enough or if you’re
camping in a tent!
1 new metal
garbage can with lid, washed & label removed
1 three foot section of 1 inch iron pipe, washed
1 roll heavy-duty aluminum foil
1 Bag briquettes
& starters
1 10-12 pound turkey
butchers twine
your favorite poultry rub
1 heavy hammer
Directions:
Purchase a small garbage can & length of pipe at your
local hardware store. Find an
appropriate spot for your oven set
up. It should be free of grass or
anything that will burn, preferably gravel, sand or dirt. Fill the lid to heaping with briquettes & light them to start heating. Drive the pipe into the ground so the can fit
upside down on it with about a 6-inch clearance. Lay a covering of 2 thicknesses of foil
hugging around the pipe & covering the ground that will extend about 6
inches beyond the inverted can. Make a
covering of foil on the top of the pipe about the size of a tennis ball. This will go up inside the turkey toward the
neck to hold the turkey upright. Remove
the giblet package & wash &
dry the turkey inside & out. Coat
the turkey with the rub. Do NOT stuff
the turkey! Sprinkle the inside of the
turkey with sea salt. Tie the wings & legs of the turkey to the body with
the twine. Place the turkey on the pipe
making sure the bird does not touch the top of the can. Place the can over the turkey & on the
foil. Cover the bottom of the can (now
the top) with red-hot coals. Place two
rings of coals around the base of the can.
Add new coals as needed to keep the entire can hot. Keep adding coals for the next 2-21/2 hours
depending on the size of your turkey. Your turkey will be done, juicy & ready
for the hungry campers! This is a great
project for the guys while the gals fix the rest of the potluck
Thanksgiving! I personally have not done
this but a friend promises you won’t be disappointed! Serves 12 hungry campers. Happy dining! Mary Lou Smith
